A diary is a dated record of your days, thoughts, and decisions. People use one to remember ordinary days, think something through, or put a noisy day somewhere outside their head.

my-diary.org is a free place to do that. A new diary is private. You can make the whole diary public later if you want other people to read it. The pages stay plain on purpose, so the writing is the point.

You can set a reminder, follow other writers, and get a note when they post. If your diary is public, you can see how many people follow it.

How to start a diary (and keep it going)

A profile picture, a picture at the top of an entry, and pictures in messages are extras. They are for people who subscribe, or who contribute to the site, for example by helping with translations.

After you log in, open Account and choose Change picture.

After you log in, open Account and go to the bottom of the page. Type your password and confirm. This permanently deletes the diary, and you would need to register again. A subscription or a contribution also unlocks a button that empties every entry and keeps the account.

After you log in, open Account and choose Make backup. It can take a moment. A download link appears on that page when the file is ready.

After you log in, open Account and set Reminder interval (days). If you have not written for that many days, the site emails you. Set the interval to 0 to turn reminders off.

Make sure your entered your email-address correctly, and that you are accepting email from my domain "my-diary.org". Also, you can check your "junk email" folder.

You can update your diary as often as you like. If you don't want to update it often, that's fine too. There are no requirements.

GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the standard time common to every place in the world. The entries are stored with timestamps in UTC. After you log in, Account has a Timezone setting: Auto, or a UTC offset, so times display in your local time.

The site is primarily written in PHP, with MySQL as the database PHP - MySQL.

The first version was up in august 2000. In the beginning of october 2000, my-diary.org was registered, and the site moved here.

The passwords are automatically generated. You can change the password under the 'Account' page after logging in.

You can reset your password here.

A new diary is private. It is not listed in the public section, and you need your email address and password to read it.

A public diary can be read by anyone, at the address shown on your home screen after you log in.

Mixed is a subscription setting. One mode keeps entries private unless you share them. The other keeps entries public unless you mark one private. Other people only see the entries that are public.

If you set the diary back to Private, it is hidden again. A page is public only when both the diary and that entry are public.

After you log in, open Account. You can set the whole diary to Private or Public. Mixed, where some entries are public and some stay private, is part of a subscription. Setting the diary back to Private hides it again.

Entries are plain text. Fonts, colors, and HTML are not used. Write a tag as #word in the entry. A tag is letters, numbers, and underscores.

Subscribing, or contributing to the site (for example by helping with translations), unlocks extras such as a profile picture, a picture at the top of an entry, and pictures in messages.

A subscription also lets you hide ads while you are logged in, and use the mixed setting so some entries are public and some stay private. It is $5 USD per month or $50 USD per year, under Account after you log in.

Yes. You can add the site to your home screen. It opens like an app and uses the same login. It is just this site, installed from the browser — there is no store app any more.

iPhone and iPad: use Safari (Chrome and Firefox on iPhone cannot add to the home screen). Open my-diary.org in Safari, tap the Share button (square with an arrow, in the toolbar), scroll and tap Add to Home Screen, then tap Add. If you do not see "Add to Home Screen", scroll the share sheet — it is often below the first row of icons. Push notifications on iPhone only work from that Home Screen icon, not from a Safari tab: open the icon, then turn them on under Account.

Computer and Android: in Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave or most other current browsers, look for an install icon in the address bar (a monitor with a down arrow, or a plus), or open the browser menu and choose Install My Diary / Add to Home screen / Install app (wording varies). On Android it lives in the browser menu, usually Install app or Add to Home screen.

If this browser supports it, an Install web app button also appears in the footer. That is the same prompt as the address bar.

Unfortunately, the site needs to make more money to pay for expenses related to the hosting and maintenance, and the income from ads and user subscriptions go towards that.

I ran the site without ads at all for many years, and paid for all out of my own pocket. However, times changes, and now the site has to make money to pay for the service it provides.

It's unfortunate, but there's no such thing as a free lunch. Someone has to pay the bills. By allowing ads, you're earning the site money. If the ads are unacceptable to you, then you can donate or subscribe. This allows you to turn off ads from within the site itself (for the duration of the subscription/donation).

Hopefully, we will get to a point where ads are not necessary.
