Baked In Chocolate

Baked In Chocolate
By: Carmelita McGrath

Knowing that the ground horns of dead things
and nettles gathered in wilderness had no power,
she took the moon instead and baked it in chocolate.

Knowing that three ancient words chanted
while a herb lay tied in ribbon under a pillow
had no power, she took a saxophone solo,
baked it in chocolate.

Knowing that after Christmas, there is only winter
for too long without relief or light, she took a June night,
baked it in chocolate.

Her lover praised the cake, dreamt off after supper
to walk under a moon on a night too strangely warm
for a jacket, only thought of returning home
when the saddest notes broke out of a third-floor window.
