Politics and football

Fri 05/05/2023
I got my hair cut at lunchtime but Boots hadn’t got my eye prescription; seems I need to keep ordering it. I had planned to go on a run when I got home, but it started to drizzle (though there was bright sunshine after I got home, but I’d had some heavy mince and rice.

I rang up to get my prescription, and they said I had to do it by email. I’d already tried doing it through the app but it worked the second time. I’m sure I’ve ordered it by phone before.

I had the news on in the afternoon, for the local election results. The Conservatives are being hit from all sides: Labour in the North and Midlands, LibDem in the South and the Greens in random places. They don't seem to have recovered from the disastrous Premierships of Johnson and Liz Truss.

Jack left earlier than expected after his sister phoned up, so I could have gone for my run at 16:00 but I had to finish the Top 100 which I’d made some daft errors with (r1 40 unpeople) added to some downright silly behaviour from the spreadsheet.

I allowed a bit of leeway to get to Waterloo – I was originally thinking of getting a pre-match snack but I left it a bit late for that. But I had time to accommodate a Northern Line train waiting for so long I got a Victoria Line from Euston to Vauxhall and picked up my usual target train.

The Tube driver said there’d been a fire, but a later Guardian report said that a train which stalled halfway into a station, the passengers had started to panic and break windows to escape, which caused smoke.

After looking at the departure board, I worked out I had enough time to buy a coffee at Clapham Junctiom, but I only just got my train after the lady initially put cows milk in the drink.

I got into the ground just as Graham was messaging me the teamsheet. They won 3-2 after being 2-1 and 1-0 down. Ablade volleyed, rather than headed in from close range, Albion then went ahead with a quick-fire cross. The winner took a hefty deflection.

I heard the scouts talking behind me. One said he was on a £10,000 retainer a 30p per mile allowance. There are 12 scouts at his ciub, all part-time. They were talking about a Woking fullback, maybe Josh Casey. It’s hard to believe they can concentrate on watching a player, when they’re talking about other football all the time. And they always leave early.

I had a bit of spare time and got some chips, which I regretted doing. Surprisingly, Chris F got on the train towards the back. At home, I was working out how I would get to the trail run on Sunday, which is harder to get to than I assumed, when I entered it.

The sex-club night I was thinking of going to, is not this week, I think it’s next Friday.
