To Bodinnick

Thur 16/03/2023
We got the bus to Paddington in time for our 09:04 train to St Austell, but it wasn’t running because of the strike. Instead we got one at 09:32 to Plymouth, and buses from there to Bodinnick, which turned out to be much better than the train, and it felt as if we were extending the holiday. In Plymouth we saw a scene of devastation; it looked as if there’d been a natural disaster, as all the trees in the central walkway were on their sides. If I’d have read more of my Guardian on the way down, I’d have seen the story about the council’s controversial decision to chop them all down, which was followed up by national ITN news that evening and Radio 4 next day.

There was a Power Plant café in a handy position. After eating we got a bus to Polperro, which was a very attractive countryside route which Jack didn’t appreciate as the windows were steamed up, but I could see it well enough. We had time to walk down to the river inlet at Crumplehorn, and the river passing through the small town, between the houses, almost like Venice We had time tp explore the coast path. Then we got a mini-bus to Polruan, though the bus went within two miles of Bodinnick, our eventual destination.

Instead we got a ferry across to Fowey, then had to rush to make sure we got the last one to Bodinnick, where we were staying at the riverside inn, which had skilfully converted two building into one, the stone steps between them still there within the new structure. We ate in the bar, vegetable curry, then did a circular walk in the dark around Brodinnick.
