Bare Bottoms and Bromley By Bow

I had some mushrooms and onion on toast when I got in from my run last night, so may have eaten too much; my head felt a bit weird this morning. I spent a lot of time looking at videos of diving contests. I love the amount of bare bottom shown as standard these days. It’s not just a question of the cossie riding up, they’re designed like that and the girls are clearly aware of what they’re showing, but don’t want to adjust it these days.

Even more astounding are athletes. They used to be embarrassed if they “lost” their shorts, (i.e they went up their bum), but now they walk around after their event blatantly showing off their bum cheeks, perhaps because thongs are standard on the beach these days. However, athletes are supposed to be wearing shorts, not swimming cossies, which makes it all the more great that they’ve got so much on display. Their shirts have also shrunk over the years, and are more like bikini tops.

When Jack got back from physio, we had time to go to the café in our street before watching England’s World Cup opener against Iran on BBC1. They scored some well-placed goals in a 6-2 win.

I made sure I left in good time for my task, our second visit to Bromley cemetery. I’ve decided the canal is too hazardous in the dark, because the path is so uneven you have to run slowly to avoid injuries, even when there’s not a bike coming the other way. Instead I followed my cycle route to Shoreditch and carried on from there. It was wet so I took a small towel and some rainproof socks to change into. I didn’t want to carry too much while running, but I was cold when I arrived in Bow so maybe I should have taken a hoodie as well. Laura commented on my new grey running tights.

By the start time, there were disappointedly only five attendees, but Alex turned up and gradually a few more arrived until we had thirteen. Grace was with her boyfriend, I was commenting on her sawing efforts. I couldn’t remember anything about her but she asked me about my marathon, which I also told Alex about.

Tall Jo, who I haven’t seen for a while, turned up late and happened to meet me when I was going to fetch some warmer gloves. She said she lives very close to the site, so "had to come". I talked to her again later about her Sunday task – the one with the special shoes - but the best chat I had was with sweet Nina, who’s been to Dorset and Cheddar Gorge just lately. I told her we were thinking of going to India next year.

This time CityMapper told me that the bus opposite to the site was coming in three minutes: four stops to Stratford (you can see the Anish Kapoor statue from where we were working) but I was cold so got a different bus which came even sooner and was heading for Dalston Junction. However I panicked when it turned a corner which seemed to be going further East, and I quickly got off. I walked back to Bow Road, which was even colder, and in the end I turned back and went up the road where the bus had gone (I checked later that road was actually going North and I could have got the bus to Hackney Wick).

I turned left at the top of the road, there was no bus coming so I eventually walked/ran as far as Mile End Road, waited five minutes and got a bus to Bethnal Green, but I'd wasted a lot of time. Back in Camden, I picked up a wrap at Sainsbury’s but was held up as there was no machine available, because half of them were shut. When people started walking past me (pushing in, essentially, whether they realised it or not), I gave up waiting, left the food and got some lentil soup from the corner shop.

Saw the highlights of the Wales v USA game before bed. There were four Fulham players involved
