Jack is back (for a short time)

Mon 23/05/2022
The tree people were supposed to meet me between 9 and 10 but never arrived. This is the only thing I’ve arranged so far, of many I need to do, and I’ve been let down by others. Then at lunchtime I was going to pick up some pies from Young Vegans, but only when I checked did they tell me their chef was off sick so today wasn’t suitable.

I couldn’t get down to work and didn’t get much else done, aprt from making some caramelised onion with rcie and lentils, before running to help Fran at the community centre. Lieke was there, back from the Netherlands for a couple of weeks, and tall Jo seemed keen to talk to me. C arrived late as ever, but managed to catch up with us after we’d done some shovelling at the nature reserve. I took a wrong turn with my wheelbarrow which puzzled some people who left later than me, but arrived first. Rohan followed me so he got lost as well. I spent some of the time in the rocky garden just chatting to Sree and Fiona.

Heather didn’t come for a drink but Sree, Leo and (slightly reluctantly) Fiona, at the Bethnal Green Tavern. We just had one drink but stayed in there for nearly an hour. Sree as ever was negative about London, but I explained that UK trains were the best I’d experienced except possibly Austria. They are always late in Germany and to a lesser extent in France, whereas I’d seen more violence in my occasional visits to German cities than in all these years living in London.

Managed to pick up the pies today, and it was good to have somewhere to go at lunchtime – in the end I walked all the way there and back; I managed to get Time Out from Kentish Town West and the milk I urgently needed, from The Fields Beneath, from where I got their Wrap Of The Day and a cookie. After work I ran to Hackney where I helped at the farm. They asked me about the Half. I met a new person, Christopher, as well as a recent recruit, Elena. Alison also turned up as well as Jennifer who is still looking to open a café in Camden, and had looked at a place in the alley next to Coal Drops Yard.

I got a bus to Old Street station, then the Northern Line, and I waited for Jack at Pret – he was out with his friends which gave us a chance to see each other briefly. After waiting half an hour I phoned him, and uncharacteristically he said I was rude phoning when he was with his friends, and hung up. This despite the fact I had messaged him at Old Street and then waited at King's Cross. I phoned back and he now wanted me to go home and bring his bag to the station his bag. So I waited for him at home until he phoned from Stratford, then I cycled back and we met between the two stations.

We went back to Pret which was still open, but my previous coffee had been too sweet and not hot enough, so I sat there and let him have his. He missed the 22:31 train as he didn’t realise it was from St Pancras, but he caught the next one from there. For once I’d brought my cycling jacket and charged my back light, so it was a good ride back, and flatter taking the Midland Road route.
