Strange wording

What do you call a baseball ball? A baseball.
What do you call a basketball ball? A basketball. What do you call a tennis ball? A tennis ball, not a Tennisball.
You don’t call a soccer ball soccerball. Hey do you play basket? Soccer? Tennis? Base? It’s strange that they’re not the same.
But football. Footballs are called footballs and football is football too.
