Marriage Story

I really liked Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy. So I decided to catch up on some of his other work. Marriage Story was actually suggested to me by one of my friends the other day while we were talking. I was taken aback when he actually suggested the movie to me, because I didn't think he would watch that sort of movie. I don't mean like he's too stupid or immature to watch such a smart, sophisticated film, it's just that he's mainly into gaming and comic books and shit, which I like too. And after I have watched it, I think it was a little grown-up for me too. But I really liked it nevertheless, at least the bits that I could understand and relate to.

I guess Adam Driver described the movie best, that it's a love story about divorce. Kinda sounds like an oxymoron, love and divorce but it's true. It's just not as simple as not loving a person anymore. I love the way the movie started off, with Charlie and Nicole telling all these things they love about each other. It must be such a nice thing to know a person so well. I guess married people are just really good friends, who happen to have sex as well. So anyways, near the beginning of the movie I have to admit it did feel boring. But hey, it's my fault, I'm probably not mature enough to understand these things. But the more you watch it, the more you forget you're actually watching a movie. The characters are real, the story is raw and most of the plot progresses through dialogue. I mean you hear the words, but it takes time to get the meaning. I myself have probably missed out on some things, so I will probably have to watch the movie again. It's just that the story is so normal, like completely ordinary, shit that most have us seen in real life but that's what makes it so exceptional. I really like movies that manage to do that.

It's probably been said a million times before and I'm willing to say it again: this movie has some of the best acting I have ever seen. And I know Adam Driver gets a lot praise, which he deserves because he really shines, but Scarlett Johansson is an equally amazing actress. I'm so glad that she's finally being taken seriously as an artist because she's been a pretty face with a "fuckable" body for so long. I mean I find her very attractive, but she's more than that. She was always a good actress, she proved herself in Lost in Translation. And then she was in MCU, made a shit ton of money, got married to Colin Jost, but now she's back. I'm really excited to watch her future work.

Laura Dern was really good at playing that asshole divorce lawyer. She is really hot too, but mostly she's just a really good actress. Ray Liotta was a also a really good asshole lawyer. If there's anything I learned from that movie, it's that divorce lawyers are assholes, it's literally their job, and they make a lot of money in exchange for being disliked by everyone they come in contact with.

I know a lot of people probably think of that Netflix clip of Adam Driver punching a wall and breaking down when they think of Marriage Story and if you think that was good acting, you're in for a pleasant surprise because the entire movie if full of phenomenal acting like that. I especially liked the bit where Adam Driver sang Being Alive, that dude is just so good at everything he does.

I have to confess that I have not watched The Squid and the Whale, so this was my first time watching a Noah Baumbach movie. After this I would like to watch some of his other stuff too.

The film is scored by Randy Newman, the dude who wrote "You've got a friend in me" from Toy Story. It complements the story so well. Just a pleasant experience overall. The more I think about the movie, the more I come to like it even more. Just fucking watch it. Don't get intimidated by the themes. This movie definitely rewards your patience. I literally have an emotional range of a teaspoon and I enjoyed it, so you probably will too.
