Day 517

Ugh. Water bill.

Weird day. I got a $2 bill in change at the bank after paying the H2O bill. Cool?

My wife got a Chinese language call from AT&T. ???

Found our lost bottle of vanilla, too, right on the shelf. ?????

Anyway, got an outlet wall plate for my daughter's room which she just got moved into. Stupid people that built the house either used the wrong screws or stripped them completely out at some point. Regardless, I was made aware that the whole socket fixture pulled clean out of the wall when my daughter unplugged her phone charger and at some point the wall plate snapped in two. Last night I managed to scrounge up two screws which seemed to fit and got the outlet tight in the junction box. Today, we bought a nylon (unbreakable!) wall plate for less than $1 and installed it in about two minutes. I feel better now.

Tonight I did some maintenance on my mom's Hamilton-Beach mixer, including paying $6 for a PDF of the owner's manual that's here somewhere, but which I can't find. This was invaluable since the manual showed the oiling ports that I didn't know existed. It also described how to adjust the mixer for optimal bowl rotation. The big win was removing the timer, which hasn't worked since the 1970's, cleaning and lubricating it, and putting it back on after a good rub down of the area behind the timer dial. Durn thing actually >works< now! One thing I was alarmed by in the manual is the news that the mixer is powerful enough to chop up nuts in batters. I'm on notice to beware of the beaters now!

I have lots of memories of Mom making cakes and candies with this chrome beast. I forgot to mention that a screw had disappeared from the motor mounting plate many years ago, making it wobbly and potentially unsafe, and that we fixed it with a new screw for 20 cents last Saturday. It's much, much more solid now, and the distinctive noise the motor makes me remember happier times.

I hope Mom would approve.
