Confessions of a Slacker

John B. is dead.

Tonight, very bored and Googling people’s names, I came across the obituary from two years ago.

He died such a young man. Six weeks before his 40th birthday. I wonder what happened.

I hadn’t seen him since he was twelve. A long, long time ago. Since then, he married and had three kids. The obit said he was “a U.S. Army Vet, a musician, cook and talented artist.”

He had a whole life and family I know nothing about. Although his first and last name was very common, I know it’s the same guy I’m thinking of because the obit listed the names of his parents and all his four siblings.

Funny… I’ve been thinking about his older brother Jim a lot the past few days, as his birthday was last Friday and then I dreamed about him a couple nights later, although I can’t remember any details about the dream at all. Jim was my age, I hadn’t seen or talked to him either in many years… I had a rather stormy on-again, off-again friendship with him when we were teenagers, and wrote about him extensively in my old diary.

And now Jim’s brother John is gone.

I don’t know what more to say. It’s strange, finding things out like this about people you knew long ago.
