Gay social groups

OK. I feel I just have to expound on my previous response to Grumbles’ comment re the gay Euchre group.

I know he was just trying to be funny, but I found myself feeling just a little miffed at his remarks in spite of myself. (OK, so I’m hypersensitive. Shoot me.)

Groups like the Euchre club I mentioned are simply a social outlet for gays who want to meet and socialize with other gays without having to hang out in bars all the damned time. They form so people can make friends with shared common interests.

In the gay community, particularly in big cities where the population is large enough to support lots of diverse groups, you can find bowling leagues, softball leagues, volleyball and other sports, groups who play board games once a week, groups who go to movies or restaurants together once or twice a month, groups who play cards, or do square dancing… hiking clubs… book clubs… ice cream socials… political and religious groups… the list is almost endless.

Usually the groups are intended as social outlets for gays, as I said, and are typically advertised in the classifieds of the local gay publications, but often the groups are open to nongays as well… oftentimes a member’s relative or good friend will join… as long as you’re gay-friendly.

I myself was on a bowling league for three years (it was fun even though I sucked at it), in a movie night group, a board games group, and several others. I made some of my best and most long-lasting friends through social outlets like these. And you never know, you might meet someone to date, maybe even Mr. (or Ms.) Right…

Or, you could sit in a bar night after night with people you have nothing in common with, and maybe just engage in random sex with people you afterward find you don’t even like all that much… or become an alcoholic…

I hope this clears things up.
