Beyond the Rocks

That’s the name of a film I just watched on TCM starring Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. Straight from the Silent Era, the film was made in 1922 — the year my parents were born.

The plot was very risqué for its time… Theodora (Swanson) falls in love with Lord Hector (Valentino) while married to another man.

Speaking of Rudolph Valentino, I recall my grandmother saying she was quite taken with him when she was a young woman. I never got it back then, but now I can see why. In fact, Gram told me that many young women swooned over him back in the day… and some even committed suicide because they knew they could never have him.

I guess I don’t understand that. There are lots of people I desire whom I can’t have… but I’m not about to kill myself over it.

Anyway, this was the first silent film I’ve watched all the way through in a long, long time… probably since I was a kid.

I tried bison yesterday.

It’s the first time in my life I’ve ever had it. They were handing out free samples at Whole Foods. Tasted a lot like beef, if you ask me.

I’m not clear on something, however. Wasn’t this an endangered species? In that case, should we be cutting up and eating them?
