Confessions of a Slacker
2007-05-19 00:00:00 (UTC)

Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight.

That’s the song that’s playing right now on the “Classic Disco” program on Music Choice’s “Showcase” channel.

It’s bringing back very fond memories of when I used to go out dancing at gay clubs in Cleveland, back in the ’80s and early ’90s… places like Chapter II, Keys, Numbers, and U4ia… this song would frequently be played at full volume as I danced ’til the wee hours.

(Now I’m in my 40s, living in Chicago, and I never go out dancing at all anymore. Go figure.)

I’m especially remembering a kid named Walt whom I used to hang out with back in 1991, and we’d go out to dinner, sometimes a movie as well, and then dancing at the clubs every weekend that summer. The year before that, he had been dating another friend of mine, but that didn’t work out… and before that even, that other friend had been dating one of my best friends at the time, which is how we met.

Anyway, I was hanging out with Walt that summer… and although he wasn’t really my type (he was a bit chubby), he had a cute face and a native Long Island accent and manner that charmed the pants off me (no, not literally). He was a newly-minted editor for a now-defunct local newspaper serving a mostly rural county just east of Cleveland. I was becoming infatuated with him, but at first I considered him only one of several possibilities for a romantic relationship in my life. One Sunday morning, however, I found myself taking a drive out into the country, picking up a copy of his newspaper, then reading his weekly column and staring at his picture while having lunch at a Dairy Queen somewhere in the vicinity. It was only then that I realized I was completely, hopelessly in love with him.

But alas… it was not to be.

Oh-oh, babe we’re gonna love tonight
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight

They said I was a loser
They said that I’ve been untrue
But I don’t care what the others say
Babe, I’m gonna be with you, yeah, yeah

Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Babe, we’re gonna love tonight)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight

All I wanna do baby, it’s true
Is give my love to you, just you
When I close my eyes, all I see
Is a place for you and me
Oh yes, there is

Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Just a part of you, babe)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight

You’re a woman like no other
You lift me when I’m down and blue
You make me care for my every day
There’s no other in my life but you, yeah, yeah

Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Babe, we’re gonna love tonight)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight Yeah, yeah

Just the thought of you late at night
Holding on to me, feels right
Knowing I will feel the first time
Holds a place deep in my mind, ooh, ooh

Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Just a part of you baby)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (All I wanna do)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Just a part of you baby)
Oh-oh babe, we’re gonna love tonight (Yeah, we’re gonna love tonight)
