Surprising News

Got a call from Silvija today and heard the most surprising news. She retired from her job at the phone company.

Turns out she retired back at the end of December, and this is the first I’m hearing about it. I wondered what was up as she’d previously told me she planned to keep working until she was 67. She just turned 59 last month.

Well, it’s because her job was eliminated. She could have looked for another position in the company, but when she did all the necessary calculating, it turned out she was already eligible to retire with full benefits. So that’s what she did.

She was calling to invite me to her retirement luncheon this Sunday. She apologized for the invitation being so last-minute, but she said she really hoped I could make it.

Now all I have to do is figure out how to get there. The restaurant where the luncheon will be held is thirty miles out in the suburbs, down the road from the office complex where Silvija and I used to work together. And there’s no public transportation anywhere near there, and I no longer have a car.

She said Carole was coming. I’ll call Carole tomorrow and ask her if she can pick me up at the train station near where she lives. I’m betting she will.

I really do want to attend the luncheon. This all seems so sudden.
