Sefton FC vs Oak Springs FC

“Today was not a good day from a coaching perspective. For the first time this season we dropped points in a 4-4 draw with Oak Springs. Everything went wrong really, we made silly mistakes, lacked leadership, no control, the whole performance was just very sloppy and below par. Going forward we did well for the better part of 60 minutes, we scored 4 goals, created chances and managed to get through, but as the game moved further back we just rushed and panicked. The back line was left exposed too many times, the discipline was poor again as Andrew found himself being red carded after 20 minutes, the whole game for us was just not up to scratch and it isn’t excusable as we only have ourselves to blame.”

“Andrew is an experienced player, and the timing for which he chose to make the foul could not have been worse and ultimately put us in a bad position. Football is not about individuals making mistakes though, it is about how the team reacts. Scoring the goals is only so good when you are able to defend your own goal, and when you are leading 4-2 with 5 minutes remaining, someone needs to take charge and control the game. The question that I need to ask of the team today is, ‘who is going to step up and do that?’ As the manager, there is only so much that I can say and do to ensure that this happens, I do my all on the side to get my point across but it is then the responsibility of someone on the pitch to turn around and actually take control. After the game I asked certain individuals who are usually the ones who take charge what happened and told the team as a whole that it is not good enough.”
“All is not doom and gloom though, as we obviously expect to drop points throughout the season. Mistakes happen and I have let the team know this, but if they can be avoided then we need to ensure this happens. All I can say now is that the lads can hopefully realise where they went wrong, and we can put it right and get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.”
