Number Forty Five

I began work on a solo project last night. I always return to my roots I suppose. I love being in a band, but I also love the freedom of making all the decisions myself. I have a concept in mind. The album will be called Love Is War. When I begin the writing and pre-production stage of a new record, I always ask myself what I'm trying to get across-what's the theme and mood? I usually want my albums to capture the overall feel of some other albums I admire. I never want to copy them, but draw inspiration from them. Two of my very favorite records, track for track, would be I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by Bright Eyes and Blood On The Tracks by the incomparable Bob Dylan. These albums I relate to a great deal, and I think any songwriter if asked would love to reach the heights these two albums provide. I'm hearing the album in my head as mostly acoustic based, minimum overdubs, subtle but powerful harmonies. A stark album dealing with the disillusionment of love and endings and beginnings. Secrets and lies and how feelings change over time. I'm excited for the process, and terrified. I really want to push myself on this one, and leave everything on the line. I've got about 12 songs in mind for it and I'm sure it will evolve over time, as the theme really identifies itself and the album begins to take a life of it's own. I love when the muse beckons.
