More Doubts

I wonder if other members of the church are constantly wondering and questioning everything like I do. I think of President Jones and you can tell the guy is all in. He believes every ounce of the restored gospel and he loves every cultural and doctrinal aspect of it. I wonder if he has ever dared to venture outside of that. Has he lived in a bubble all his life? Surely he has been presented with adversity and surely his faith has been tested. He lives in this world too. Is he not tempted by the "philosophies of men?"

I often think that the strongest, most devoted members of the church are the ones who've put blinders on, who have refused to see anything else around them, who instantly reject any information or ideas that contradict what they've been taught. But that's what we're sort of taught to do, isn't it? "An eye single to the glory of God." "The strait and narrow path." We're taught to be in the world but not of the world. We're taught to be a beacon light for others who are allegedly lost in darkness. The Lord's people are to be a peculiar people. We're to be hated as He was hated. We're supposed to be different and be called old fashioned, outdated, uncool, weird, crazy. When we stand up for values which seem archaic, or not progressive enough, and we get push back from society, we are reminded at the kind of ridicule and persecution ancient prophets endured for doing the same. Stay the course and you'll be rewarded! Don't fear men, fear God!

This church has always had an answer for everything, but sometimes I detect bullshit. There are inconsistencies in logic here and there. Some explanations seem reaching, grasping at straws. But if you take it all in as truth, it's a compelling story. The one critical aspect of this religion for me is the Book of Mormon. I have a hard time believing that anyone or any group of men could have fabricated such a book, let alone a young man with a 4th grade education. If it were not for the Book of Mormon, I wouldn't believe in God or Jesus or anything. I mean, the bible is great, but it's also a mess. Some verses say God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are one, yet Jesus prays to the Father, states that he's doing the will of the Father who sent him, and is referred to as the Son of God, not God himself. There are tons of commandments and instruction of what to do and what not to do but it also says all you have to do is believe to be saved. There are thousands of Christian denominations who base their beliefs on the bible alone, yet all of them believe something different. It's a disaster.

To be Continued . . .
