Rant

Why is religion such an important thing? Why do people judge others based on their religion? Why do people say "I'll pray for you" when you're having a tough time? What if, theoretically, I were a Satanist? (I'm not, just to be clear) But if I were, would you want me "praying" to who I believe in for you? No? Then why do it for others?
Why is religion such an important thing? Why does only wearing a dress/skirt define your religion? Why do people judge you based on religion? Why do people think there is one God? If you are born in America, you may believe there is one God. In other countries, there may be a Goddess, or another being you worship. Atheists, like myself, don't believe in religion. I have been bashed for my beliefs (or rather lack of) by family, "friends", and even those whom I've never met before. We are raised to believe the lie that is Christianity. How do we know what "God" to believe in? Why should we believe in one, but not the others?
I was raised in a mostly Christian family, we sometimes went to church. When I was about 12 years old, I began to realize what a "God" was, and wondering if it was something I should believe in. Whether I should or not, I don't. I can't change my mind, I can't make myself believe in something. It is what it is. I am who I am.
Why do people have to go to church on Sundays and Wednesdays? If there were a God, that created this Earth, the place in which we live, would he want us driving cars to a church twice weekly? Polluting and destroying the Earth he created? Why couldn't people worship him from home? Churches aren't necessary. They do have resources to help people, when they have no food, shelter, or in other situations. But why can't we have community centers that do that? Why can't atheists be a part of helping others? We aren't bad people. We're just people. Atheists have hearts, we have love to give, time to volunteer, a helping hand, items to donate, etc. It isn't like we walk around killing every Christian we see. The only difference between you & me, is I just don't believe.
The world is a crazy place. A hundred years ago, no one could have predicted the world being the way it is now. I'm not too excited to see how it will be in ten, twenty, or even fifty years. Young teens, even twelve year olds, are becoming parents. We are forced to pay taxes, which go to teen parents (to pay for WIC, Foodstamps), which go to building churches (even when some of us don't believe in religion. Taxes should be an optional donation to making the world a better place to live in. I don't want to give money (specifically 9% tax per USD) to teenagers who get pregnant, to help them pay for food, or WIC. It just encourages teenagers that it's okay to have kids, while you're still a kid. It teaches them that children are a meal ticket to an easier life. "Have kids while you're a teenager and you get WIC, foodstamps, cheap housing, we'll pay your bills if you're a struggling single mother." Having kids should be tough, it's meant to be tough. I understand if you're a teenager and accidentally get pregnant, and choose to keep said child, but it has become a trend.
People say "God has a plan for you." "Put your trust in God and he will lead you to the path you're supposed to take." But what about following our dreams or our own path? What about our plans for ourselves? We are all individuals, and our lives aren't meant to be lived in ways considered to be "normal." People aren't meant to follow any certain path, but rather to create new ones.
Back to being a taxpayer, I can understand that as an American, we have to pay taxes, but why can't we choose what to pay tax on? Why can't I pay taxes for a community center or homeless shelter? Or even an animal shelter? If we all pick & choose what we pay taxes on, then what we don't choose to pay taxes on (example: churches) there would just be less of them built. We can't live without buying things, so taxes will be paid, I just believe that we should have a choice on what our money goes towards. I don't think this is, in any way, unreasonable.

"America is a free country!" But is it really? The majority of the population believes in a higher being (God) and that people can pray to him for certain things to happen. People say things along the lines of "Believe in God and he will lead you down the right path." or "Believe in God, he has a plan for you." What about us following our hearts? About doing the things we believe in?
