Mercury in the Ohio River

A list of roughly 60 wastewater treatment plants, coal-fired power plants and other industrial facilities has been sent to state regulators by the eight-state Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, which sets water quality standards for the Ohio River.

This list came into play because current monitoring of their effluent being dumped into the Ohio River will not meet the new standards being put into place regarding mercury levels that is to take affect, originally in October of this year.

Because these facilities are so far off the mark with being able to meet these new standards, it's possible there will be delays in enacting and or enforcing the new guidelines.

I think its sad that we continue to risk the health of the people who use the river for recreational purposes and the river ecosystem and let factories continue to pollute because it will cost them to much to fix the problems to meet safe standards.
