The Speech

The Speech

(Note: After watching a speech given by Charlie Chaplin in “The Great Dictator,” from 1940; I wondered what that speech might sound like if it was rewritten for today. Here is what I came up with.)

I’m sorry if I sound like just another speech maker, I don’t mean to, that’s not my purpose. I don’t want to adversely influence people’s way of life or create needless anxiety in anyone. I should, though, like to help everyone, if possible; Christian, Jew, Muslim, Atheist; black man or white; rich or poor; no matter their homeland or language. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that, it’s what they do. We want to live according to each other’s happiness, not according to each other’s misery. We don’t really want to hate or despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone, this good Earth is still rich, and can still provide for everyone. Our way of life can be free and beautiful if that’s what we choose, but I’m afraid somewhere we may have all lost our way.
Mistrust and greed have poisoned men’s souls. We have created barricades throughout the world with hatred, which has led us into unnecessary misery and needless bloodshed.
We have developed opportunities of better communication, but we have shut ourselves in or cut ourselves off from one another. Increased abundance still leaves so many in want. Our vast knowledge has made us cynical. Our vanity, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. We have more technology, but less humanity. We have much more awareness, but hardly enough compassion, friendship, and love. Without these qualities, life will remain difficult and all could be lost.
The internet and the cellphone have brought us closer together. The very nature of these technological advances cries out to the goodness of people, cries out for universal understanding, for the unity of us all. Yet these cries seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Even now this message, my message, is reaching millions throughout the world; millions of despairing men, women, and even young children, victims of a cruel world that allows those of influence to torture and imprison innocent people. Whether it be physically, mentally, emotionally, politically, or even spiritually. Influence not brought about by reasonable means, but by the spread of fear and ignorance.
To those who read this, I say, do not despair. The misery that is now upon us has been caught up in the winds of change. The change from fear and ignorance to one of courage, education, and true understanding. The ways of hatred, fear, and old adversaries will give way to human cooperation. Genuine change can be stifled or delayed, but it can never be stopped. The hate of mankind will pass, old ideologies die, and the power taken from the people will be restored. Since change is inevitable, the hope of peace will never perish.
People of this Earth; do not give yourselves to dishonest politicians, they who despise you while smiling to your face, ignore you especially in your time of greatest need, who would dictate your lives, tell you what to do, what to think, and what to feel. Those who would deceive you, mislead you, treat you like cattle, or use you in unwarranted lies. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural people, hateful people, with hateful minds, and hateful hearts. You are not hateful. You are not cattle. You are human beings. You still have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate. Only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural. People of this Earth, do not follow the outdated and misguided beliefs of these “so called” leaders. Follow your heart.
In the 17th chapter of St. Luke, it is written: “The kingdom of God is within man,” not one man or group of men, but in all men and women. In You.
You, the people, have the power, the power to create a better world. The power to create a real and lasting peace among all nations, the power to true happiness. You, the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, and to make this world a better place for all.
Then, in the name of humanity and all that is holy, let us use that power, let us all unite as we have never united before. Let us work together for a new world, a decent world that will give all people a chance at life, that will guarantee the young a future and our elders respect. A world where we are all secure.
By the promises of these same things, many “so called” leaders have risen to power, but in fact, they lied. They have not fulfilled these promises and never will. They have catered to a select few, while the many continue to struggle. So it is up to us to fulfill these promises on our own. Let us start by freeing this world from the barriers of fear and ignorance which surround and divide us. Do away with the selfishness, indifference, hatred, and intolerance. Let us work toward a world of reason, a world where compassion and cooperation contribute to real global understanding.
People of this Earth, in the name of humanity and all we believe to be holy; let us finally unite as one world. It is our right, it is what we were meant to be.
