Why wait?

I learned recently of a pastor friend of mine from a previous church I served with, struggling with cancer. It has taken a horrible toll on his body and as I thought about the potential of him passing, I thought what would I share if asked to honor him at his funeral. As I thought about this, my mind couldn't help but ponder the timing if his death. What if... began to take over. What if he died after I had the surgery on my vocal chords and I couldn't speak to honor him. As I thought about that, I asked myself, why am I even thinking about that. Why wait to honor him. Why not tell him now how much he has meant to me and the eternal impact his life has had on others. This has motivated me to get out a pen and paper and to write him and honor him now. Romans 12:10 tells us to "Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." Why do we as humans often wait until after someone has past, to honor them. Why not "let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds," (Hebrews 10:9) through encouraging one another. If I was to put this into practice and send my honor to him now (you don't need a voice to do this, you can write it or email it) than I don't need to worry about when he passes and the timing of it. I will have already "said" my words of honor to him.
