My One Good Deed

a few months ago i watched this terrible, awful movie called
"Pay It Forward" it has kevin spacey, haley joel osment
(the anti-christ) and helen hunt. it is predictably sappy.
with the anti-christ acting all innocent and naive,
conducting a project by which he does 3 nice things for
three random people, who in turn "pay it forward." gay.

so anyways, today i was driving down the highway when i saw
a minivan at the side of the road with a flat tire. as the
itnerstate was cresting on a downward slope i was able to
see it at least a mile or so before i got to it. and as
people around here drive like little granny bitches, it took
me a good 2 mins just to get to it.

now, i had every intention of blowing right by the person in
distress. there are a number of reasons, the first of which
is, "who the fuck doesn't have AAA now-a-days?" but then i
thought...well, i don't have triple-a. a few months ago i
got two flat tires in a week. flat tires suck. but i took
my nuts out of my pants, placed them on the dashboard and
got out and changed those tires like a man. the first was
in the pouring rain with my dog and wife watching at 11 pm.
the second was with my father-in-law at the gas station. i
changed the second one in less than 5 mins. you read that
right. 5 mins.

so i decided to pull over. i don't really know why. i just
felt i should at least check it out. so i pulled over and
walked up to the minivan carefully so as to not get hit by
one of the brain-dead chromosome-challenged monkeys
careening down the interstate.

in the van was a mother with a bunch of kids (actually three
but more than one kid seems like a lot to me). she seemed
out of her mind. she didn't have triple-a. she also
couldn't figure out where the spare tire was on her car.
she had called her husband, but predictably he was in a
meeting or whatnot. she was about to call a tow truck to
admit defeat.

luckily i had gotten a flat tire with the a similar minivan
a while back (i tend to get a lot of flat tires). the spare
is up underneath the van itself. after about 30 mins, i had
the spare on, covered in dirt and grime from the tires, i
couldn't help but think of myself as the next jesus christ.
man was i awesome. man was i cool!

of course i then went on to shop at Lowe's for my
(never-ending) home improvement endeavors and promptly
almost ran over two mexicans who were very aggressive in the
peddling of "work-for-hire". oh and i also occupied a
handicapped parking space which I SWEAR TO GOD did not have
a handicapped sign on it when i parked there.

so all in all i'm guessing my net karma averaged out to zero
today. but still. the good deed is worth it just for how
great it makes you feel. if only more people woudl realize
how amazingly selfish we can be, yet still help those in need.
