My Buddhist Journey thru My Christian Faith

My Buddhist Journey thru My Christian Faith

By Patrick Fitzgerald Gabriel

As a Christian I am deeply aware that I live and move and
have my being in Christ – as does all creation. The first
Christian festival I ever went to was Jesus 79 in San
Francisco’s Candlestick Park. My two best friends Richard
Sequeria, Greg Reodell and myself, were all recently
saved; the three of us received the gift of tongues that
day made for a very spiritual trip back home to Merced,
Ca. We all headed to San Francisco with our Charismatic
Catholic prayer group called the King of Kings.

Each of us is formed in the image and likeness of God. I
owe my life to our Trinitarian faith. Throughout the years
my faith and spiritual practice have been largely shaped
and intensely imprinted by the mystics and the meditative
spiritual tradition. I have grow in awareness that the
Grace of God, which is God’s very presence cannot be
constrained. Because of my faith in the gracious goodness
of Godhead, I am open to receive the wisdom from, and be
in dialogue with, other faith traditions; not to mention
the sciences and the arts.
In the past two years I have been practicing the art of
Zen Meditation. I started my journey with Master Eckhart
Tolle and “A New Earth Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose”
moving onto his first book “The Power of Now”. These
studies lead me to my Unitarian Universalist Congregation.
They exist to help people live lives of meaning and
purpose. Their mission is to celebrate life, empower
people, care for one another and help build a better
world. They believe that engagement with a religious
community can transform lives, and they invite you to join
in that effort. How can anyone not want follow this
mission for their only self worth. The essence of
Tolle’s “The Power of Now” is learning the meaning of
Enlightenment.
