Reading before Patagonia trip from 11/2 to 18, 2009

In preparation for Patagonia, did some reading last night from our 1968
Encyclopedia Brittanica and from Charles Darwin's Beagle Trip. He writes so
well! Observes extremely well, greatly curious about all observations, thinks
clearly, with observations on insects that he netted 17 miles from shore, for
instance. Describes the terrain with diagrams of the geology. Will be interesting
to see it for ourselves including how much has changed in 1.7 centuries in an
inhospitable part of the world about as far from the equator as parts of
England! What a difference the right currents make! The gulf stream warms
England whereas the Falklands carries cold water from the southern poles.
