S. A. Trip entry 10 for 7 Oct 1986.

7 October 1986 8:45 page 23 (this entry is written opposite
a detail of "On the Terrace" by Pierre Auguste Renoir from
1881 of a beautiful and beautifully garbed young woman and
her flowered hat beautifully dressed daughter, both looking
springlike, appropriate to our season here though compared
to England and Florence, we're a bit behind.)

Back to the diary: This is the first half of the second half
of our journey, a day to be spent traveling on the ocean
surface.

Exercising with the class led by Anna Zuckerman has been
very pleasant. In a break from any previous [exercise]
experience, I've participated in every one. Indeed, except
for one lecture, I've participated in nearly everything that
the program has had to offer while at the same time writing
numerous letters.

I'm in the Penquin lounge where in 25 minutes Peter Harrison
gives another lecture. At a choice seat, I'm next to Anne
Yoakum, a just retired businesswoman, who is playing an
electronic game of backgammon.

page 24 opposite a detail from Francois Boucher's Pense-t-il
aux Raisins? (Is he thinking about the grapes? The caption
notes that although grapes are much in the picture so is her
décolletage)

back to the diary

I am carrying Tomlinson's book on The Sea and The Jungle
(1912) loaned by Charlie Clauser. Also Anna Z.'s now
autographed by her and by Jack Grove is with me to be read.
I hope to read the hydrocephalus chapter today [I gather
that at the time I was writing this for a book edited by
Richard Leech].

I appreciated that Shiela Diamond wanted to have me last
night. Always the exotic butterfly, I was a blossom last
night. I hope I tasted ok. Darwin [roommate for the trip] is
clearly an odd person out, usually sitting by himself,
plying me with multiple stories of his life/youth. I see him
as a future friend -- his place in Nevada is about 450 miles
from San Francisco.

[to a reader who saw this, it sounded that I had an affair
with Shiela Diamond but I recall distinctly that I did not
have an affair with anyone on the trip, so I make this
23-year later editorial comment; I believe I was a guest at
her dinner table. Have no memory of her at all and doubt the
spelling of the name.]
