S. A. Trip entry 9 for 6 Oct 1986.

Entry on diary-calendar week for April 2 opposite a picture
by Pierre Cecile Puvis de Chavannes, a French painter in the
mid-late 1800s, entitled "The Sacred Groove" -- The three
arts and the three muses float through the air and meander
along a stream, mountains and forest in the background. It's
a photograph of large mural in the Palais des Arts in Lyon,
France.

WE traveled today and arrived at the Devil's Island complex
(also known as "Isle de Salud" or Isles of Solution (note
opposite picture!) Took pictures of the cells, vine covered
walls, trees in what was once solitary confinement and we
saw the cemetary of the little ones of the staff. It was
less than idyllic on Royale Island but the salvation came
from lack of mosquitoes.

One letter today and postcards from Devil's Island. Now on
upper deck after pulling anchor ad pulling away. Here it is
breezy yet shaded from the sun as we sit on chairs that were
originally from the Queen Mary. The ocean now is green. I
learned today that Darwin [roommate for trip] had

been a teenaged band director until his father talked him
out of it. He has provided enormous quantities of
information about himself.

Barbara Bedoyn found a "schizo-hibiscus" which she showed
proudly to me and, learning of Dr. Vera Steele (also a
psychiatrist) she showed it to her as well. She's the bird
lady west of S.F. and Berkeley. I found one and pressed in
the bird book I purchased from the ship's store by Peter
Harrison.

I feel warmly connected to most everyone although some seem
intimidated by the psychiatrist label/identity. Teddie Kreps
and I have become quite good friends.
