Rest in Cairo; onto Jordan today

Long packed day going to be after midnight. Encountered
the Aswan aiport three times yesterday. Going to Abu
Simbel, returning, going to Cairo. Familiarity did nothing
by way of fondness!

Went shopping the streets of Aswan and came away with an
camel skin belt (so he said) and a granite sculpture of a
scribe modeled on an image from the old kingdom. Enjoyed
the bargaining and the discussion with the W friends in
whom I should include Wendel Whitlock alluded to as WW in
an early missive. He reinjured his calf descending into
the area of the Abu Simbel monumental sculptures. On deck
we discussed how he got excited by Egypt in his 9th grade
by a teacher, Mr. Brentlaw. Told also of his father whom
he knew well as the sole parent from Wendell's ages 3 to
14 when the father died of heart disease. But he had a
full time father then that I'd guess augered well for him
in his future life.

One fellow traveler on her way to Rhode Island felt very
ill just before leaving the boat and couldn't travel
Lufthansa, so had to stay in a hotel in Cairo until she
recovers. But everyone weary and grateful for the rest
here. No wake up call except for those going immediately
home who got two hours before return to the airport and
home. Fifteen are going onto Jordan, including our W
friends, a couple from Seattle, and two couples from Door
county. Others too: we're liking them all.

Nice suite on the first floor here. We feel we lucked out,
but John Tobler III seems to always get a grand suite (on
the ship and now here) based on the III (he and Beth are
one of the Door County couples). As Susie mentioned, we
believe we've made some new good friends for the future.
