I Debbie...
Civil War in 2008 America
Sometimes you're the windshield
Sometimes you're the bug
Sometimes it all comes together
Sometimes it all falls apart
Wouldn't it be nice if you could count on people to tell
what you need to know when you need to know it.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could talk to people around you
like they were half or even a quarter as intelligent as you.
Not like you had to dumb down your words or water down your
tone for fear of setting into motion some emotional tirade
befitting a two year old.
Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to resort to asking
other people for help only because you couldn't get
anywhere unless you used their power. Not your rights or
thoughts or God forbid your resources.
Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to see your room
used as a battle grounds for other teachers. Never mind
your kids were sleeping or having a moment of calm. No,
that would be selfish on my part. Why not use the area in
between rooms as a way to communicate over and over and
more loudly you needed the phone or a message not even in
your realm of business.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to talk or vent to someone
without fear of recrimination or explanation. Or better yet
without fear that your words would come back a tattered
mess to bite you in your ass.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to run your classroom the
way you know it should be run without others telling you
how to do your job. Or how they would do it if they were in
your shoes. Or question you despite your stress level. Or
doubt your knowledge. Or talk to your parents like they
know a damn thing about the child you have only been with
for months and months.
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to go to the bathroom
without begging someone to come into your room and when
they do you run because they are as incompetant as they
come. On the same note ...
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to leave your room for a
lunch and not find it disorganized and every child awake. I
mean how hard is it to rock a kid back to sleep? How hard
is it to change a diaper and mark it down so I don't have
to wonder if they were changed and when. Why should I have
to wonder while I am choking down food if anything is left
undone so I have twice or three times as much work waiting
for me when I get back.
Have at it,
I Debbie
