Amboseli -- long trip south

Mostly traveling today, including 75 kilometers of rough
road to the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. At breakfast,
wonderful pictures of Mt. Kenya silhouetted against the
morning. Then we signed out of Sweetwaters and got on our
way for the long trip south reading papers on the way that
said that talks had broken down, but mostly signaled to me
that Kofi Annan was pushing the buttons of the principles.
Did sudoku, partially read a wonderful book on South
AFrica in the fossils of human ancestors, slept, and saw
Nairobi as well as the many scenes of Kenya. We stopped at
a store where I bought some batiks and Susie a wooden
giraffe gift. Interesting interaction with the Maasai
salesman.

The last 75 kilometers rough road but the large family of
elephants that came down the mountain and the 5-star
Serena resort make up for it. From a tent (albeit a very
nice tent) to super-luxury tonight with men in Maasai
dress. I'm not at dinner now (fasting), but had my (what
else?) Tusker Beer. Many monkeys making noises in the
trees, but not sure they're vervets (sorry, JOhn Price,
but I'm listening carefully for any such word). Saw a
wonderful baboon family though.
