A true 'glass story' of warm ears

Susie and Lisa have been going through their parents'
papers and found an old letter to their father, dated 21st
March, 1939, from a friend, James Christie of North Manse,
Stromness, Orkney, of whom we know nothing else. In it Mr.
Christie refers to having met on the banks of the Deveron
River (a 61 mile river in northeastern Scotland). He
refers to "Glass" that we conjecture he refers to Glasgow
but don't really know. Here's a paragraph from the letter
that caught our eye.

"Here is a true Glass story. (It is a well known fact that
when a 'cattle-beast' is ill, its ears become a cold
before death and farmers often feel them during illness.)

"A year or two a Glass farmer had a severe heart-attack, &
both he and the family all thought that the end was near.
When the doctor -- a farmer's son -- arrived, he at once
touched the ears, & said, "Na, na, min; Ye're nae deein';
yer lugs are nae caul." Immediate relief of farmer &
family! & the old gentleman is still to the fore!"
