way to go asleep

I have lunch monthly with a man now 94 years old. He saw
me doing sudoku so said that he had his own way of passing
time, as when at the urinal or trying to sleep. A my-diary
friend said she has trouble falling asleep sometimes, so I
gave his formula, as follows:

Think of a name of someone. As you lie there, count in
your head the number of letters. then count the number of
distinct vowels. Multiply. Then go down each letter(s) of
the name and list a word that starts with it. When you
finish with that, do the next, and so on.

Auden = 5 letters with 3 distinct vowels. 3x5 means you
need to end with 15 words. First will be three beginning
with a,then 3 beginning with u and so on.

Puts me to sleep. Redirects the intense thinking. If it
doesn't work, then go to another name and reiterate. If
other thoughts intrude, it's not that hard usually to know
where you left off!
