Mother picked up by police

After 8 am I will call my mother while. Mother has finally
acceded to a need for sheltered living as she loses track
of things and many are concerned about her continuing to
live alone. Have investigated a place four blocks away that
seems ideally suited. Got a call from the police yesterday.
She’d sat in the shade under a nice tree in the heat on the
way back from the hairdresser. A neighbor or someone called
the police about, I suppose, an elderly woman in the heat
and humidty of Wisconsin July, having sat there. Was she in
distress?

Mother told the officer that she’d just had her haircut in
Spencer. Since this is a town some miles away from her
place in Madison, this might have caused concern on his
part. He ascertained that she doesn’t drive anymore so
delicately expressed the need to take her home, then
calling a cousin who has the same last name and lives in
town as well as my number, three hours away. When I talked
to her a bit later, she spontaneously did not mention her
adventure; after I brought it up, she told me too that
she’d just before gotten her hair done in Spencer: I
repeated what she’d said and she exclaimed, “Oh, they come
from Spencer. The hairdressers drive in from Spencer.”

Later in the conversation she was completely compliant with
our feelings that she needs a place here. Fortunately,
though she has no air conditioning, her neighbor does and
offered her to come over if necessary. Her fan is going
well though and she feels good away from the outside.
