Saturday, July 8th

Last weekend made a small road trip into the city. I was
up at four thirty am and was in Manhattan by seventhirty in
the morning. I took the mountain bike up with me an
immediately went riding on the west side highway park.
Thats the one that that stretches the whole length pretty
much of manhattan.
I cut into the city and coming upon this small deli cafe
stopped and had breakfast. It had four small tables out on
the sidewalk so I grabbed on of those seats and just
relaxed for a half our or so. I then went on to check out
the street festivals about town. These are in actuality
numorous vendors set up selling everything from paintings
to clothing to food. Most stretch several blocks and the
things one finds one can never guess upon arriving.
Because of the ethnic mixture in the city the variety of
items and foods are fantastic.
A bit after noontime I called my artist pal Alan and then
drove out to Staten Island to meet him at his new place. He
just moved in with a woman (whom seems very cool) and her
daughter. He found the ad for the room on Craiglist. The
house is about a quarter mile from the Hudson river and
about a mile or so from the Staten Island ferry going over
to Manhattan. He told me the ferry over to the city is
free. I never knew that. I was on it a very long time ago.
I actually painted a small scooner that was passing the
ferry while riding to manhattan.
After picking alan up we went over to Woodside on Long
Island to pick up his art supplies. He got a job painting a
backdrop for a small theatre. So..after picking up his
stuff we went over to the East Village in Manhattan. The
apartment we went into was on a small street in an area
called "Little India" which is lined with a variety of
eateries serving Indian food. I havent tried much of food
from india but would like to go back and give some a whirl.
I heard its very good.
Now the apartment we were in was huge. It was very very
long and had approx. six or so rooms on a line from the
street going back. The woman who owned the apartment was
off on business. I was quite impressed with the way she
decorated her apartment with the large colorful sheets of
many different materials and hues hanging above her windows
as curtains, I cant really explain it all but it was
impressive none the least. The apartment could easily rent
for fifty thousand a month in that part of the city.
We did our thing..walked about the city a bit then took
off and I dropped Alan back off on Staten Island.
I was going to go on toward the Jersey shore but decided
to go back onto Manhattan. So I did. I went over to Lower
Manhattan and parked the van on a secluded street, crawled
onto the back (I had the van loaded for a road trip
complete with cot, sleeping bag, extra clothing, etc) and
immediately passed out. Tomorrow...sunday in the city.
later.
