9. From Two to Four and Beyond

A medical school goes from 2 to 4 years in the mid-1970s
and for ten years I was part of that process. An
extraordinary time for me, allowing me great authority, a
chairman at 36, to plan curriculum, chair the school's
curriculum committee as it did a massive change in that,
orchestrate creative and interesting classes for students,
including a great amount of lectures (I'd never before
done that), and many other pedagogical doings. I learned
enormously, became president of a national association,
planned and brought about a residency program, and came up
with my "great idea" in early NOvember, 1980. Over the next
year, I wrote a paper that was published in a highly
prestigious journal in latter part of 1982. SInce then I've
been working on a book that on which only now do I seem to
be able to work on it, 25 years after the "great idea."
