Ooooh, spooky…

How strange, I made two consecutive entries under the title 'Sir Gustav
Nossal' without even realising it.

If you must know, Sir Gustav Nossal is one of Australia's greatest achievers in
medical science, having made groundbreaking discoveries about the immune
system, and striving to use them to bring about substantial change in the
health of 3rd world countries. There are many websites where you can read
about this upstanding Australian citizen - interrogate Google for more.

The reason I like him is because of his funny name. Sir Gustav Nossal. I
especially like the 'Nossal' part. It sounds very much like 'Nasal' - to do with
the nose. I like noses. This, juxtaposed against the stuffy, formal prefix of
'Sir', delivers sheer comic bliss to me - 'Sir Nose' or 'Sir regarding the Nose' -
while the two are united by the brilliant bridge, from out of left field - Gustav!
What a team. It makes me think of an old french guy with a big nose. This is
in fact quite accurate, seeing that he is quite old and has a sizeable
olfactory receptacle, with the exception of the fact that he was born in
Austria.

Another notable feature of Sir Gus is his list of qualifications - he must have a
ten foot long business card! See below.

Sir Gustav Nossal (AC KtCBE MB BS BSc(Med) PhD HonMDMainz HonMDNcl
HonMDLeeds HonDScSyd HonDScQld HonLLDMon FRCP FRACP FRACMA
FRACOGHon FRSE FTS PresAA FRS) Australian of the Year for 2000.

What a guy! What a name! What a waste of time!

By the way, an excellent website about noses can be found here:

Enjoy!
