Some musings on masochism

It occurred to me today as I was walking to class that
humans are the only organisms that can choose to hurt
themselves. All other creatures have instincts built in
so that they are actually incapable of making decisions
that will harm themselves. I found that idea very
fascinating. Part of that is what most people would call
our "free will", but what I wonder is why do we choose to
hurt ourselves, ever? Sometimes we just don't know what
will harm us, but sometimes we actually choose bad things
on purpose. I guess there's always a pay off. But then
again, the word 'masochist' is in our vocabulary for a
reason. The human mind is just too complex. Maybe it's
something we do just because we can. That's a huge
attraction for most people. I don't know, it's just
something I wondered about today. I have to think of some
way to keep myself occupied while walking on campus.
Otherwise I get frustrated because walking takes so damn
long to get places.
