Job options... oh my.

I just posted this to the bulletin boards for help:

============================
I need help figuring something out.... maybe y'll can help
me?

I've been at my current job for just over a year. I was
promoted a few months after I started, and for the most
part, I like the job I'm doing now. It's half case
management and half paperwork-stuff. The paperwork part is
what I really like -- I audit certain documents and I'm
pretty good at it. I'm a manager and I do trainings and
stuff, but I'm desperate to get rid of my caseload. I've
been doing case management for two and a half years and
I'm so over it.

Back in October I interviewed for a brand new position in
another department that would allow me to do the auditing
stuff full time. It's like my dream job. It's been almost
4 months and I still haven't gotten an answer about this
position. The reasons why it's taking so long are really
long and involved -- basically it's one guy who can't make
his damn mind up about the nitty gritty of the job duties.
Meanwhile, I keep bugging the HR lady and I never get a
solid answer as to what's going on. The job would only pay
about $2K more per year, but it would be exactly what I
want to do, as long as the job duties are clearly spelled
out. I'm pretty much doing the job already just not
getting paid for it!

The other day my boss approached me about another position
that's available in our clinic. It would be a decent pay
raise (at least $7K more) but it's a job I've never been
interested in. It would be a ton of paperwork, which I'm
used to, and I get the feeling like I could handle the
work load, but I'm not sure I'd be happy with the
supervisor there (even though she loves me), and I'm just
not sure I'd really be happy overall with that job.

The woman who had this job for the last 9 years is still
with the agency, she moved to a different position last
spring. Would it be weird for me to call her and ask her
about the job? My boss also interviewed for this job when
it was available over the summer and she turned it down
when it was offered to her because she didn't think it was
worth the pay.

I dunno... I feel like maybe if I talk to HR lady and
explain that I'm "interested" in other position, then
she'll light a fire under wishy-washy guy and he'll hurry
up and hire me.

What would you do? I'm so confused!
==============================================

So, yeah, I attended a training all day today and who sits
right next to me but BBL... just so she could try to
convince me to apply for this job in the clinic. She asked
if I'd do it for $40K... that's a LOT of money for me. I'm
afraid to just go for it, I think I really need to think
about it, but I'm also afraid that if I wait too long I'll
miss my chance. I feel like if I talk to HR lady and let
her know I'm interested in something else, she'll let
dickhead know who will get freaked out and hire me and
give me whatever I want. Or maybe I'm just full of myself.
Whatever.

Hm. I'm seriously confused. I'll talk to Jon when he gets
home. I hope it's not too late.....
