my stupid mouth

oh, those mexicans

may i just say that i've gotten mighty good at being
deceitful? i guess will all of the decadent things going
on in st. joe's, my offenses would be considered minor. i
was going over there to watch a movie ('a christmas
story'...best christmas movie everrrr), and you're
supposed to leave your ID at the front desk if you don't
live in that building. there was a crowd of people
around, and the people who walked in ahead of me didn't
even show their IDs so neither did i. it also helped that
the two of those guys together probably totaled 550
pounds, so i wasn't very conspicuous.

for some reason the front desk worker got switched before
emily and colleen got there, so they weren't able to sneak
by. when colleen and i were leaving, emily asked me to
get her ID from the desk since i didn't need to get mine.
o-freakin'-k, while i have done this once before, it's not
something i like doing. it's one thing to simply walk by
the desk but to actually go up to the person and take an
ID from right under their nose when the picture is quite
obviously not you? pretty tricky. but i did it. and
with no difficulties. i just hate that she asked me to,
especially when i don't see the need for her to sleep in
scott's bed every night...even if she is sick (but more on
that another time. to be honest, i'm sick of talking
about it.).

we had a very successful college republicans' event
toniight much thanks to mike...republican mike, of
course. i was excited because the speaker, reed hillman,
was one of about 20 state reps from massachusetts who are
republicans. i guess he's voted sort of non-
conservatively on some issues, which was good for the
democrats in the audience. he did say something that i
found hilarious...hilarious because it was so ignorant,
and stuff like that entertains me. others, however, took
offense. he was talking about drugs and cartels, and he
said something about the "mexicans" who run msot of the
cartels. the fact that he said this group of people runs
the cartels was not an issue. quite frankly, he's right,
and having served as the superintendent of the state
police department, i'm sure he has his facts about such a
thing straight. the problem was that he classified all
hispanics as mexicans. while i, frankly, have no problem
with this because i think people are way too concerned
with being politically correct and take offense much too
easily, it was ignorant of him to say that as a
speaker...especially when the girl asking the question
happened to be partly (and obviously so) hispanice
herself. there was also another hispanic kid, but neither
of them said anything. their faces said it all as did
those of the rest of the audience. in my defense at not
having been offended by this comment, i can put hillman's
remark into perspective for you. you see, it's as if
hillman came from another country...let's say mexico for
the heck of it...and he was speaking to a group of mainly
mexicans with a few americans. and then let's say that he
was talking about red sox fans in a negative way (though i
don't know why he would be). maybe he was saying that
they are known for getting drunk and rowdy at games and
end up doing illegal things as a result. so maybe when he
was saying this, he referred to all americans as people
from massachusetts. therefore, he would be classifying
everyone in our country as one type of person, from one
specific area. although all americans are from america,
they certainly are not all from massachusetts. but would
those two americans in the speaker's audience take great
offense? would the mexicans gasp at the ginat leap the
man had taken? no, of course not. maybe it's not the
best analogy, but it's the same thing...i swear.

there were two other funny things that happened at the
event. while hillman was on this drug topic, he said, "do
you know how easy it is to get heroin?" almost
immediately we all heard a voice from the back row
say, "where?" so we turned around to see who has said
this, and who was it? none other than father steve, our
campus minister! so unbelievably funny.

the other entertaining thing was mike (referring to him as
mike v. from now on when i mean the republican one)...just
him in general. first of all, he was wearing a tie with
the republican elephant all over it. i told him i liked
it, and he said, "i thought it was appropriate for
tonight...actually, it's appropriate for every night." so
true. he was hilarious when introducing hillman, who is
apparently a close acquaintance of his. he is such a
politician already. the way he stood at the podium and is
hand gestures and tone of voice...so perfect.

time for more family guy maybe? i think the stress of
finals and papers and all the reading has thrown me back
into my former habit of watching l'homme de la famille
every time i want to procrastinate.
