Why sports?

Sometimes I wonder why sports are so important in our
society. Look at how much fame and money professional
athletes get. What are they doing that's so special, so
important? Teachers who help shape our future get a
pittance compared to someone who throws a ball around all
day, someone who PLAYS all day. So what is it that's so
essential about sports? Why do I spend so much time on
track? It's because I'm practicing for life. I'm
learning how to deal with pain, both physical and mental.
I'm experiencing glory, failure, success. By competing in
a sport and by succeeding, I'm practicing for life and
learning the skills it takes to succeed in life. I've
noticed that people who compete in sports have a much
higher pain tolerance than those who don't- physically and
mentally. It's because we're used to pain. We experience
pain every single time we practice or compete. But we're
so used to that pain that we don't notice it anymore. We
have trained ourselves to push through the pain. We have
learned that we can do so much more than what we would
first think. The human body is an amazing thing, and most
people underestimate what theirs can do. Athletes push
their limits to reach their full capabilities. So every
day when I go out to practice, I'm not just practicing to
be the best pole vaulter I can be, I'm practicing to be
the best person I can be.
