Killing People: A Hau Story
2004-07-26 03:12:51 (UTC)

Prolog

The small fire cackled in the remains of a burned
out house. A small child, no older then 7 or 8, sat huddled
in a corner. She had sat there for most of the night in
what was left of her living room as the flames engulfed the
small suburban town around her. A single tear ran down her
cheek as she sat there in the eerie semi-darkness. The
light from the fire cast shadows along the wall, fueling
thoughts of monster lurking just beyond her field of
vision. She wished her mother was with her. They had been
separated when the upstairs hallways had collapsed and her
mother had fallen into a fiery inferno in the ruins of
their basement. She shifted her weight from one foot to the
other as the wind sent a chill up her spine. A strange
prickle went up her neck as she glanced across the room at
the black hole that was the front door. She had the strange
sensation that a large figure stood there although she
could not see it. Then a gentle grow came as whatever was
there took several steps forward toward her. She shuddered
and took cover behind the scorched couch that lay beside
her. The stranger continued to come close and closer to her
hiding place. “Please, don’t let it find me. Please, don’t
let the monster find me.” She whispered anxiously under her
breath. The Thing stopped at the foot of the couch and
began to sniff the air. The little girl closed her eyes,
praying, praying, praying that It would just go away. The
couch began to creak as it was slowly lifted in the air and
tossed to the other side of the room. The little girl sat
with her hands over her head and her eyes closed tight
whispering “Go away, please go away. She only raised her
head when the Thing was practically on top of her. She sat
there paralyzed as she stared into it’s cold, black,
merciless eyes. The Thing looked down at her, rather
surprised at first. Then with a growl-like voice said, “I’m
the Hau, AUHHHHHHHHH.” The girl screamed as the monster
leaped on her. With ease, the Thing grabbed the girl by the
shoulders and forced her struggling head into its gapping,
powerful jaws. With a single chomp, It had crushed her
skull and It grinned as the delicious mix of blood and
brains poured from its chops. “Ah, little girl brains,
yummy,” it said as it took another bite from the limp
body, “Now if only I could find my damn horn.” The Hau
walked out of the house and continued along the road,
leaving the smoldering ruins behind him. He was no closer
to finding his horn, but at least he killed people. The Hau
smiled. Killing people was his favorite pass time.
