Assorting Musings

I did just the basics today--the laundry, of course, and
the dishes, picking up in the living room, making the bed
and then watering the garden and flowers but I did it all
well before 8 a.m. and that was it for the day for anything
remotely resembling work.

I thought about taking a nap but began working on a new
scrap quilt instead. I pulled fabrics and ironed them--now
there's a sign of someone who's obsessed with
quilting--ironing fabrics when the temperatures are closing
in on 100 degrees! I went through the fabrics I pulled,
culled them, got more and did the same thing. I marked and
cut and stacked and then pieced five blocks. The quilt will
only need 42 blocks so that was a good start.

John asked about blackberry pie but I checked and the
blackberries aren't ready yet. It'll be another couple of
weeks and they'll last until the first freeze. That's
always been my favorite pie--warm with a little vanilla ice
cream. It's the essence of summer. Oh, no! Wait! The
essence of summer is garden rippened tomaotes. Or corn
straight from the garden. Or pesto made from basil I've
grown from seed. Or....well, I guess maybe there's more
than just one. Flowers --the big, blowsy, showy kinds that,
if they could speak, would shout "Look at me! Look at me!"
--are a big part of summer for me too. I especially love
the old fashioned flowers--sweet peas, hollyhocks,
snapdragons. I'm also partial to red geraniums but they
have to be a true red and I like them best when they're
growing in clay pots.

John and I napped for a few hours after dinner. We awoke
around 9 p.m. and both of us went around the house, opeing
up doors and windows and turning on fans. We stayed up and
began watching a DVD I'd checked out from the library--a
year's worth of English produced mysteries based on the Jack
Frost character. We'd both already read all the books
they're based on so the plots held no surprises but we
enjoyed it anyway. I fell back asleep around midnight but
John stayed up reading until past 3 a.m.

I'd sent a birthday card to Lucille a couple of days ago and
then called her this afternoon. I've known Lucille for
almost 20 years; our sons went to school together from first
grade on and she was part of the Ladies Tea and Terrorist
Society four of us organized to deal with the school system.
You can read that story here if you're interested:

Lucille lives in Peoria, near the river, in the house that
belonged to her mother. She's an avid gardener and a
generous and loving friend.
