my stupid mouth

the tightest tight end in the nfl

best...thing...ever! ok (because that's always what i say
before i start telling a story), my grandmother made a
donation to the dudley police department and they sent her
tickets to a softball game between an all pro patriots
celebrity team and a team of local police officers. she
gave all six tickets to me, which thrilled me beyond
belief. that was several weeks- maybe a few months- ago.
i had mentioned it to "the boys" awhile back, and i emailed
jeff about it last night saying that he, nick, and joel
could go if they wanted. no reply. but what did i
expect? i figured i was being nice by offering them the
tickets seeing as at least jeff and nick are huge football
fans. and it's not like jeff didn't get the email. i
highly doubt that he was online all frekaing day and never
checked his email. but one or more of them probably had to
work anyway. lindsay and taryn both had to work, too, and
i doubt they would've enjoyed going. so cristin and i
went, unsure of whom the patriots team would be composed.
when we first got there, i thought there was no one at the
school (did i mention it was at our school, which makes it
even more exciting?), but then we rounded the corner and
saw lots of cars. there were a few hundred people there
but much less than i had anticipated.

the programs that we got once we got there didn't even have
the names of the patriots who were playing inside, so we
had to wait for them to be announced to find out. i had
expected some third-stringers, maybe one person i'd heard
of, and then a bunch of ex-patriots. but it was better
than i had ever imagined! (except that time i had imagined
that tom brady would be there) so there were four current
players: asante samuel, christian fauria, matt chatham,
and patrick pass (who was late because he got lost and was
driving around webser for a long time). and then there
were others like steve deossie, scott zolak, and a few
other ex-players who i didn't really know. but i was
excited that i knew 6 out of ten. and i had heard of all
the others and saw some of them at the other game i went to
like this a few years ago.

so basically, the patriots gave the police officers a good
whooping. they won 11-5 and that was a gift because they
let them get 3 runs in the last inning. throughout the
whole game, i was excited for the autograph signing but
worried that cristin wouldn't want to wait. to my
surprise, she was more than willing, even happy, to stay
and get autographs. we met christian fauria first. he was
the one i was most excited about. he's a freaking starting
tight end and he scored mad touchdowns the season before
last. and he jumps up with both legs out in the air in
front of him and spikes the ball after scoring...how cool
is that?

cristin asked him to take a picture with us (see? it paid
not to clean my car out after the relay because i still had
a camera in there) because i was too nervous, but she ended
up being the one who was shaking afterwards; i think she
developed a bit of a crush. so christian was the nicest of
them all. then we waited in line for scott zolak, whose
autograph i already got at that last game...but it was
still cool. i want his job, so it was cool. everything
was cool. then steve deossie. what a character. we got a
picture with him, too, except he had to spit before we took
it. kind of gross. and he put his arms around us, but i
wasn't sure if i was supposed to do that to him. i figured
out that he was really sweaty, so i decided against it.
the rest of the players were sitting on the bench behind
home plate, so we only had to wait in one line for them and
then move down the line to get them to sign our programs.

here's where it got interesting. you see, a little ways
into the game, matt chatham got hit in the foot really hard
with a softball that was hit by one of the police
officers. i didn't think it was a big deal until i saw him
limping afterwards when we were getting autographs.
cristin said something to him about hoping it wouldn't ruin
his season. i knew it wasn't smart to bring that up, but,
for some reason, i lost all control of my mouth and made it
worse. he already seemed mad that she had brought that up,
and then i went and said something about how "at least our
school will be mentioned on tv." something completely
dumb, i don't even remember my exact words. so he got even
madder and replied with something like "i don't think so,"
which sounded very angry and sarcastic. there's
funny/witty sarcastic and then there's angry sarcastic, and
this was definitely angry sarcastic. but i revel in the
fact that i made matt chatham angry because it really made
my day, my week, my month, and even my year (catch the
friends theme song reference there?). so then we waited
for one more guy. i think it was tony simmons. the thing
is, they all signed on the same page, and they're
signatures are so messy that i can't even tell who signed
or where they signed. fauria's is distinguishable, but
that's about it. i feel like i can't call him by his last
name since we've now formally met...sort of.

oh man, so exciting.
