The Nine Faces of Dave

done and done

It's all over. As of Wednesday at 9:45 AM, my last exam was
finished, and my on-site vacation began. Today I'm packing
my stuff up in preparation for my parents' arrival later on
tonight. Packing is a severe pain; I cringe just thinking
about moving when I have my own place.

So far my grades have been good, though the two I'm actually
concerned about aren't in yet. I did quite well on my last
theory exam, especially considering that I took it on about
two hours of sleep (even though I went to bed early) and had
Twin Peaks on the brain throughout the entire thing. There
is nothing worse than attempting a difficult reduction while
simultaneously trying to figure out who killed Laura Palmer.

On the subject of Twin Peaks, I watched the pilot the night
before my theory exam, and am now pretty well hooked. I am
planning to buy the first season on DVD, and the second when
it is released, then "Fire Walk With Me," the movie made to
end the series. One of the great things about the series is
that it stars Kyle MacLachlan, who was the protagonist in an
earlier David Lynch work, "Blue Velvet." It gives me a very
real sense that the two are linked, as if the guy from "Blue
Velvet" grew up to be an FBI agent.

My other recent obsessive pop-culture foray is "Castlevania:
Rondo of Blood." This most excellent title was sadly never
released in the states, which is unfortunate, as it was the
precursor to the better-known "Symphony of the Night." I'm
not sure yet how the two compare, as I've not played much of
"Symphony," but so far "Rondo" is much harder. I will need
to try and get "Symphony of the Night," but it will be hard;
it's out of print, and the people who have it generally are
not even considering selling. It's just that good.

To cement the weirdness of the last week, my hair is halfway
dreadlocked as a result of last night. It's an interesting
look, to say the least, but I don't think I'm quite ready to
be a rastafarian. At any rate, it's amazing what can sound
like a really good idea when you've put away a couple White
Russians. In all seriousness, though, I have been wondering
how this would look for a while, so now I know, and knowing
is half the battle.

So now I'm just trying to get ready to leave town. Frankly,
I can't wait to get home. I've had enough of this school.

This is Dave, signing off.
