Anniversary, Quilting and Mothers

John and I had still another conversation about our upcoming
silver wedding anniversary. We talked about having a party,
although it's not a prospect either one of one would really
like and since it's the Sunday before Christmas, rather
awkward. He suggested we could have it after the fact, in
January, but I reminded him the weather's often bad in
January so I'm not sure that's a very good idea either. We
were both more interested in the idea of renewing our vows
with a small reception at the church afterwards. That's
something we'll ponder on for a while.

I've been working like mad on the antique star quilt that's
been in the frame for quite a while. I'm more than half
done quilting it and hope to have it finished by the end of
the month.

Sunday is Mother's Day. It'll be the first one without my
mother, which will be hard. We had an unexpected and
unannounced visit by John's mother last Sunday. His father
was there too but, as usual, he just sat and listened. I
think at some point he dozed off for a bit. She made a
couple of unkind and hurtful comments directed towards John,
which he later brushed off, although it was clear to me he
was unhappy about them. She's the type of woman who always
has something to say about everyone and everything and ends
up putting her foot in it. Planned or unplanned,
intentional or not, I wish she'd keep quiet as she so often
says things that will make one or both of wince inwardly.
We never say anything directly to her about her comments as
she's sensitive and her feelings would be hurt if we did but
I truly feel for John for having to put up with it.
