I am not a clerk

I like being single

1. I love using the breaks between my classes to go to a
coffeeshop and sit silently in a comfortable chair, sipping
my warm beverage and watching the people walk by. This is
always the nicest part of my day.

2. I love when I have the house to myself in the evening
and can put on some jazz, cook pasta, down a few glasses of
wine and then spend the night at the piano.

3. I love going out on a sunny saturday afternoon and
walking down the avenue with sunglasses on, admiring the
knicknacks in the shops and contemplating a new literary
purchase.

4. I love sleeping in on Sunday and spending the entire
morning reading the newspaper while munching on frosted
mini-wheats.

5. I love to sit in the sun for hours on campus with a
brand new book.

6. I love to wander through the science buildings looking
at the displays. When it's warm I like to amble through the
leafier areas of the university.

7. I love to sign out musical scores and the corresponding
recordings from the library, listening to them and noticing
all the details I missed.

8. I love when I get completely absorbed in a programming
assignment and four hours go by without notice or
interruption.

9. I love curling up with a favorite old movie, in my dark
room where no one can mock it.

10. I love doing the above with "particularly absorbing
computer game" substituted for "favorite old movie".

I love all of the above things far, far better than awkward
conversation paired with mediocre entertainment. This is
the reason why I look forward so dreamily to the day when I
live alone. Being able to do at least one of these things
every day is, and has always been, the carrot at the end of
the stick for me in this whole "growing up" affair.
