a mini-vent

For molecular genetics tomorrow I'm supposed to read this
paper about proteolysis of this certain protein in phage
lambda. The first of the guide questions the prof gave us
for the paper is "What is the central point of this
paper?" And my first thought when I read that question
was, "Funny...I was asking myself the very same thing."
It's one of those papers that seems very vague and even
more esoteric. I don't feel like it says anything earth
shattering or even very amazing. Lambda is amazing and the
genetics in the paper are amazing and the control systems
in the phage are amazing, and yet, the paper is
ridiculously dull. The authors don't seem excited. And
while good science is a lot of dull repetition and drudgery
sometimes, it is exciting. I feel like they just got some
data and decided they needed to publish. It's like it's
written by people who don't really love science, and that's
just sad. Okay, I'm getting off my science soapbox now, so
I can try to figure out whether or not there actually is
something useful in this paper. :)
