More Snow!

When we woke this morning it was snowing heavily and it
continued snowing. This was not good because Jack needed to
get to the airport in Portland, 100 miles north of here, to
catch a plan to Washington, D.C. early Friday morning.

We looked at the Oregon Department of Transportation Road
Cams on their website and things did not look good. Then we
discovered that chains were required all along I-5. We had
to come up with other options. We decided on trying to get
Jack to Albany (25 miles north of here) to catch Amtrak to
Portland where he could then take the Tri-Met bus to the
airport and from the airport get a shuttle to a nearby motel
where he could stay the night before catching his plane on
Friday. I printed out the bus schedules and directions from
the Amtrak station to the bus stop and found a motel with
reasonable prices or what passes for reasonable prices near
the airport. Then I called and made his train reservation.

John and Jack left at 1 p.m. and got into Albany more than
an hour later. John used an ATM to get Jack some extra cash
(he'll be using his credit card mostly and then pay it off
with the $2500 relocation bonus his company is giving him
later this month) and brought him to the train station. A
couple going to Portland offered to make certain that he got
to the right Tri-Met station to catch the bus to the
airport. Traveling angels is what I believe they are.

Jack forgot the information he needs for the motel in
Virginia and said he would call me this evening from the
motel in Portland to get it. That way I would also have
confirmation that he'd arrived at the motel safely.

To keep myself occupied I've been putting all the Christmas
decorations away and putting up my snowmen. I've washed the
dining room table tablecloth and set a crystal bowl full of
oranges on it. Because of the weather I've begun cooking
dinner early (it's 2:30 p.m. now) but if nothing else we
have pea soup and bread which is already made.

I've updated my Books Read for December and my total for
2003 was exactly 100 books. I'm going to have 100 books
read for next year's goal too.
