Food for thought-poetry

I gave my heart, my soul, my tears and fears
without concern; I received little in return
I saw the sun's rays peek through the clouds
and heard, aloud...
her silence.
How do you relate without a word,
was this merely the scholars retreat,
how could I defeat your fears
when you decided not to speak
I could never share what's not given
I could merely sit here in my prison
of loneliness... with you
We kept each other company, whenever you'd decide,
now's my turn to want you, where'd you run and hide
You've seen places I may never know and lived a life
untouched by strife, you're a gilded bird in a lofty cage,
how could you be a wife?
You chirp all night for all to hear, when your call is
answered and suitors appear, you raise your wing, still
your voice and refuse to sing
They're left confused with spirits bruised, yet you still
have your voice.
When darkness falls, you resume your call, but now it's
only noise
Your imprisoned within your tree for all to see, your cage
is opened wide. Your wings, unused can't support you and
you've nowhere else to hide.
There are birds of prey that fly at night and now you
perch there in plain sight, about to become food for
thought.
Those who've imprisoned you yesterday are far away, you
race there when you can, when times get hard on the
boulevard they'll leave you to your tan
Your chick can fly without you, she learned when you
weren't there, chasing dreams without sleeping; you still
hide within your fear.
