Bright As Stars

Today was a cool, sultry, summer day. I got up a
little late today, so I got to work about ten minutes, not
too bad. But then it seemed to drag on, even though I did
everything in my power to pass the time. I went through
the day w/o a break and left with a sandwich, since I
hadn't eaten all day and it was three by then. I called
Vee to get a ride, since we were goin' to the pool today.
She agreed to come pick me up and I finished the left-over
from a smoothie I had made. It was a nice and beautiful
afternoon, so I went home, showered, changed into my
swimsuit, and ran off to Vee and Shorty's place. We
decided against the public pool, since no one's ever
really there and drove out to the open "beach" around
town.
Naturally, we were the only blacks there, but we
didn't care. We spread our towels over the sand and laid
down. Vee and Shorty got up and played football in the
water with some white guys, as I sat and organized my
schedule. They came back and we just sat and chatted and
made fun of the white girls next to us, who sat boredly
listening to one of their friends talk about absolutely
nothing! I wanted to go over there and tell her to get to
the point or shut the f*ck up! A little while later, we
left and went to Dairy Queen and got some treats.
Since we had nothin' else to do, we went to the
mall. Shorty said that the VP might be workin' at
Footlocker, and sure enough, when we got to the window, we
saw him, helping someone. He was so fine that if I were a
stranger, I'd try on every shoe in the store, just to get
him to talk to me and help me! Anyway, so I smiled widely
at him and gave him a long hug. He said I was out of
control, whutever that means, and asked whut we were up
to. We told him about our trip to the beach and our plan
to have a get-together there next week when we all had a
day off. And I jokingly, half-truthfully told him we'd be
skinny-dippin' afterwards and he just gave me that
infamous smile of his. I couldn't stop smiling at him and
since we weren't doin' anything later, I invited him to
come over to "our" apartment to watch my movies I let him
and Shakespeare borrow the last time I saw them. He said
that he wouldn't be of much company b/c his brother had
recently been shot up and is now in the hospital. Just
last week, he told us that his mother had had a stroke and
so things just weren't goin' well for his family. I
wanted to jump up and hug him again, but I thought it'd
seem contrived.
Well, Shorty got him to get her some shoes to try
on, but after that, he hugged us all goodbye (me last...I
know, I feel special) and we let him get back to work.
Shortly after that we left and went home. I went to my
apartment to call Mouse and tell her how wonderful it was
to see the VP as she told me about her call to her summer
fling...from the Intellectual's apartment! After that, I
worked out a little, then went to the grocery store with
Vee to get a few things and we got back and felt like
pizza, but Pizza Hut was closed, so we got wings and
cheesebread from another place, ate that, Shorty came in
for a min, then went to bed, and I left shortly
afterwards. It was pretty cool and it was actually one of
the first and few times Vee and I hung out w/o Shorty and
talked a bit. I found it funny how mention of Doc kept
comin' up, in the conversation with the VP (b/c they're
using Doc's car while he's out of town) and with Vee (as
we were discussing women cleanin' for their men, she
brought up the fact that Doc's girl comes over and cleans
their apartment occasionally). For a minute there, I
thought she was goin' to lecture me about foolin' around
with Doc, but she didn't go there and I wasn't about to
push it b/c I didn't want to hear it. So that was
interestin' and thus, the day comes to an end. Until next
time, live, love, life!
