Church

John and I walked hand in hand to church this morning. It's
only one house away from us, a small, white country church
built by settlers more than 100 years ago. There were about
25 of us. Most were people I know and have known for many
years. Homer and Juanita who lived down the road a piece
from us. Homer must be well into his eighties now. He
helped John put in fences when we first moved out to the
country place. Bob and Margaret who are also in their
eighties and long-time neighbors were there. I still see
Bob out on his tractor and she's stayed involved in the
local historical society. Bob and Carol, also neighbors.
Bob is also a farmer; Carol taught my boys Sunday school
years ago. She brought wildflower bouquets for the altar.
Branches from hawthorn trees with red flowers, blue irises
and the last of the white snowball blooms made for a
patriotic display. Betty was there; her husband Sam is in a
nursing home. Earl who's on the city council; Doris who
used to be our local postmistress; Lyle and Doreen who I
knew from school activities, Stephanie who brought her
toddler nephew Aaron and Rosalie who is recovering from knee
surgery. Well, that's some of them anyway.

There was a long list of joys and concerns shared. Among
the illnesses and accidents, news about relatives and
friends in the military, a report about the quilt
show and the impending birth of Karen's sister's first baby
was a mention that Linda, our choir director, wasn't there
today because she's gone camping this week-end. "Is there a
wedding in the offing?" asked Pastor Bruce. Could be,
could be!

The sermon today was a simple one "Our Friends Who Gave
Their All". It was about Memorial Day but also that we love
one another as God as loved us. The last hymn we sang was
"What A Friend We Have in Jesus". I enjoyed it very
much.

Tuesdays we have choir practice and the first Wednesday in
June is the monthly friends and family potluck so there are
more church activities to look forward to in the near
future.
